Functions of the institute

The institute aims at carrying out extensive and original research projects on a variety of contagious diseases from the standpoint of preventive medicine, improving animal health and welfare by suppressing infectious diseases, and clarifying and supporting the scientific background of animal health and animal welfare in the country. These functions may be summarized as follows:

1.      Basic and applied research on infectious diseases

2.      Reference service for avian influenza virus

3.      Infectious diseases surveillance program, and collection, analysis, and distribution of information on infectiuos diseases

4.      National control and extension of techniques to local laboratories

5.      International cooperation activities

Virology Department

The mission of NIVR is carrying out researches on a variety of contagious diseases from the standpoint of prevention and controlling the diseases to improve the animal health. These functions may be summarized into development of vaccines and advance diagnosis methods, surveillance of infectious diseases, international cooperation and training for local laboratories. We have been working in virology department which belongs to NIVR. Our department mission is classification, identification, serotyping and molecular typing of pathogenic viruses which caused the diseases in animal. We perform diagnosis and investigation in farms and communities. Molecular analysis of virulence of such viruses has been intensively made, which outcomes are applied to the development of new methods for early detection, and effective treatment and prevention.

History of Virology Department

We belong to National Institute of Veterinary Research (NIVR) as a research section. In our section, our work at NIVR is mainly concerned with the diagnosis and control of viral diseases in animal. Our responsibilities are taking samples in the field, performing diagnosis in laboratory, writing reports and giving feedback to the farmer. We also carry out and implement some research works on animal viral diseases such as Japanese encephalitis (JE), Classical swine fever (CSF) and Avian influenza (AI)... The researchs are related to vaccine for preventing the diseases, new diagnosis methods, methods for controlling infectious diseases. We also involve in some active surveys which regard on Avian Influenza, Classical swine fever and some other bovine disease such as Blue tongue, Bovine ephemeral fever and Bovine viral diarrhea. In addition, we regularly come and transfer our knowledge, our techniques to laboratories of some provinces including Sub Department of Animal Health or Regional animal health center, they can work more efficiency and come up with new techniques. Some techniques  such as agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID), fluorescent antibody test (FAT), haemagglutination test (HA), haemagglutination inhibition (HI), virus neutralization test (VN), virus isolation (VI), Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), polymerase chain  reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR are well established in our section. Besides, our office has many contacts with foreign organizations like JICA (Japan),  CDC (USA), BTC (Belgium), Hong Kong University, FAO (UN), WHO (UN), Cirad (France) and CARD (Australia).
