The National Institute of Veterinary Research (NIVR) was established on January 8, 1969. In the 35 years since then, the Institute has passed back and forth between different changes and operated under difficult conditions. The Institute has made valuable contributions to the development of agriculture and rural areas. The development of the Institute can be divided into two major periods from 1969 to 1998 and from 1999 to 2004.

During the first period from 1969 to 1998, the Institute focused mainly on the application of global veterinary technologies to improve Vietnam livestock sector, including programs that tackled cattle disease (02-03), swine disease (02-08), KN 02 (KN02-13 to KN02-19) and KC03-17. During the period from 1999 to 2004, the Institute made enormous efforts in programs KC04-06, KC04-16, 7 research themes at ministry level every year, various international projects with JICA, Belgium, Australia, CIRAD, CDC, Hong Kong, and DANIDA.
